Що таке віртуальні сервери?

What are virtual servers?

A virtual server (VPS, VDS) is an emulation of a dedicated server, created on the basis of a physical server using special software.

Simply put, one physical server is divided into several virtual ones, each of which has its own resources, such as:
  • CPU time: CPU power available to the virtual server.
  • RAM: The amount of memory that a virtual server can use to perform tasks.
  • Storage: Space on the hard drive to store the operating system, applications, and data.
  • Operating System: The choice of OS that the user can install and configure on their virtual server.

Virtual servers are managed by a hypervisor, which distributes the resources of a physical server between virtual machines.

There are several types of virtualization:

  • Hardware virtualization: Provides the highest level of isolation and performance because each virtual machine has access to its own hardware resources.
  • Kernel-based hypervisor: Uses the kernel resources of the host operating system for virtualization, which provides a lighter weight and ease of use.
  • Container Virtualization: Packages an application and its dependencies into an isolated environment, making it more portable and easier to deploy.

Advantages of using virtual servers:

  • Cost-effectiveness: VPS hosting is usually cheaper than renting a dedicated server because you only pay for the resources you use.
  • Scalability: You can easily increase or decrease the resources of your virtual server as your needs change.
  • Flexibility: You can choose any operating system and software you want to install on your virtual server.
  • Ease of Management: Most hosting providers provide a control panel through which you can easily manage your virtual server.
  • Reliability: Virtual servers are less prone to failure than physical servers because they can be easily restored from backups.

Disadvantages of using virtual servers:

  • Limited resources: The resources of your virtual server are limited by the resources of the physical server on which it is hosted.
  • Security: If a security breach occurs on one of the virtual servers on a physical host, other virtual servers can potentially be affected.
  • Dependence on your hosting provider: You are dependent on your hosting provider for the performance, availability and security of your virtual server.
  • Large financial costs compared to buying a physical server.

In general, virtual servers
is a great option for small businesses as well as personal projects that need more resources than general purpose hosting but don't need full control over a dedicated server. If you need high performance and reliability, we recommend buying a physical server. If you need a server for personal tasks and you need to know its cost, go to the DELL Server Configurator link.
