Review of Dell PowerEdge R760 server based on Intel Xeon Platinum 8592+ processors

Intel Xeon Platinum 8592+ specifications
We started with the Dell configuration in our R760, which included two Intel 6430 processors and 1TB of DDR5 4800 RAM, before swapping them out for 8592+ processors. While the Xeon 6340 wasn't the top of the line Sapphire Rapids, we'll still be comparing it to the Xeon 8592+. We put them side by side in this review not to show them as direct competitors, but to demonstrate the potential of existing platforms with the release of new Emerald Rapids processors.

Review of Dell PowerEdge R760 server based on Intel Xeon Platinum 8592+ Server Solutions

We have listed the numbers for the Sapphire Rapids Platinum 8480+ as well as the HP ML350 for comparison with the Xeon 8592+ to get closer numbers. The 8480+ in the ML350 Ge11 is one spot away from being the best processor in the Sapphire Rapids lineup. It should be noted that we are only looking at processors, and not comparing the servers themselves.

Intel Xeon Platinum 8592+ processor performance

Blender OptiX
First up is Blender OptiX, an open source 3D modeling program. This benchmark was run using the Blender Benchmark CLI utility. The rating is the number of samples per minute, the more the better.

The Xeon 8592+ processors are off to a great start, more than doubling the performance of the Xeon 6430 according to the specifications. However, the Xeon 8480+ came close to the Xeon 8592+ by 81 points in the class.

Cinebench R23
Maxon's Cinebench R23 is a CPU rendering benchmark that uses all CPU cores and threads. We ran it for both multi-core and single-core tests. The higher the score, the better. In this benchmark, we see about twice as much performance on the Emerald Rapids Xeon 8592+ as on the Sapphire Rapids 6430. We saw slightly better single-core performance on the Xeon 8480+ than on the Xeon 8592+, but that wasn't surprising since the Xeon 8480+ had higher base clock frequency. The Xeon 8592+ pulled ahead in the multi-core test.

Cinebench 2024
Here are the CPU results for the Cinebench 2024 version.

We saw a similar performance pattern between the three processors as in Cinebench R23.

Cinebench 2024 2x Xeon Platinum 8592+(ER) (R760 – 1TB DDR5 4800MHz) 2x Xeon Gold 6430(SR) (R760 – 1TB DDR5 4800MHz) 2x Xeon Platinum 8480+(SR) (ML350 G11 – 256GB DDR5 4400MHz)

Geekbench 6
Geekbench 6 is a cross-platform benchmark that measures overall system performance. The higher the score, the better. Geekbench offers a graphics test, but without the GPU we only have results for the CPU.

*We had issues with the Emerald Rapids Xeon 8592+ in this benchmark and it didn't complete, so we'll come back to this when we can get performance numbers. So far we only have results for the Xeon 6430s and Xeon 8480+s*.

Geekbench 6 2x Xeon Platinum 8592+(ER) (R760 – 1TB DDR5 4800MHz) 2x Xeon Gold 6430(SR) (R760 – 1TB DDR5 4800MHz) 2x Xeon Platinum 8480+(SR) (ML350 G11 – 256GB DDR5 4400MHz)

CPU Z
While this isn't exactly a benchmark, we thought it worth mentioning the difference in memory speed since the only change is the processor installed.

First we took a picture of the memory tab for the Sapphire Rapids Xeon 6430 that were originally installed in our R760.

Next is a snapshot of the memory tab for the Emerald Rapids Xeon 8592+.

CPUz Xeon 8592+

There is some difference in memory timing on the Xeon 8592+, making it slightly lower than our Xeon 6430, but probably not enough to affect performance in most real-world applications.

Conclusion
As expected, the Intel Xeon Platinum 8592+ performed much better in most tests than the Xeon 6430, but this is only logical since they are not direct competitors. With the addition of the Xeon 8480+, we see the performance gap narrow significantly as it is the direct predecessor of the Xeon 8592+. A big advantage of the 5th generation Xeon chips is that they use the same socket as the 4th generation, which allows us to retrofit older platforms in the field, as we have done with some of our other servers.

We saw significant performance improvements across all of our workloads between the two 4th Gen Intel Xeon processors and the 5th Gen Xeon 8592+. The biggest improvements were seen in our compute workloads like y-cruncher. In our 25 billion runs, we clocked 229 and 187 seconds on the Gold 6430 and Platinum 8480+, respectively, dropping to 157 seconds on the Platinum 8592+. Cinebench R23 and 2024 also saw significant performance gains, from the 4th Gen Platinum 8480+ to the 5th Gen Platinum 8592+. In the R23 we saw a jump in performance from 79k to 110k and in 2024 the speed went from 4.699 to 6.001.

The Intel Xeon Platinum 8592+ marks a big step forward for the company, and while it can't compete with AMD's powerful chips, the 8592+ has unique strengths that make it an attractive choice. Intel has significantly optimized these processors for artificial intelligence and high-performance computing, offering reliable performance in all areas.
