Intel introduces artificial intelligence to Xeon server processors

At MWC 2024 in Barcelona, Intel announced its upcoming Intel® Xeon® processor with built-in artificial intelligence (AI) acceleration, codenamed Granite Rapids-D, which will be used in the new Dell Poweredge R760 server models. The manufacturer emphasized that the new Xeon® has already passed initial testing with key partners.

In today's announcements, Intel focuses on expanding the industry's capabilities to further modernize and monetize 5G, edge and enterprise infrastructures and investments, and take advantage of the adoption of artificial intelligence. For more than a decade, Intel has been working with customers and partners to transform today's network infrastructure from fixed functions to a software-defined platform and deliver success at the edge with more than 90,000 real-world deployments.

In collaboration with 5G core software vendors, Intel has evaluated the performance of the next-generation Intel Xeon processor for the 5G core, codenamed Sierra Forest. The processor shows a 2.7 times increase in performance per rack.

Intel architecture is the foundation of cloud software-defined backbone networks around the world, and most virtualized network servers run on Intel processors. The primary choice of operators, hardware manufacturers and software vendors, Intel Xeon platforms have set the bar in commercial deployments to deliver 5G core performance with excellent total cost of ownership and end-to-end power management – all thanks to a world-class ecosystem

In addition, Intel announced Intel's Edge Platform, a modular and open software platform that enables enterprises to build, deploy, run, manage and scale edge and artificial intelligence solutions on off-the-shelf hardware with the ease of cloud computing.

The Intel Edge Platform has unique capabilities, including support for heterogeneous components to reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO), contactless policy-based management of infrastructure and applications, artificial intelligence for the fleet of edge nodes, a single interface to manage it all. Additionally, the OpenVINO™ inference AI environment is built in to optimize real-time AI inference and dynamically place tasks in infrastructure software for application deployment.
