32TB WD Ultrastar DC HC690 HDD and 128TB NVMe SSD
Western Digital has announced the 32 TB WD Ultrastar DC HC690 Hard Drive and the 128 TB enterprise-class NVMe SSD.
The WD Ultrastar DC HC690 is a solid-state hard drive with a capacity of 32 TB. It's also a hard drive with SMR technology, which can be problematic if hidden in the system unit. In data centers, SMR is a well-known technology that can be used to increase disk capacity, especially in archive systems.
WD also demonstrated a 128 TB model based on QLC NAND.
WD shows the performance of the QLC solid-state drive at 6.53 GB/s for sequential writing. It's interesting that the AMD Ryzen 5 3600X series platform is used here, because exhibition power is expensive. This also means that it is an earlier PCIe Gen4 controller.
It is important to understand what "AI/ML applications" are. Large AI clusters use these high-capacity QLC drives to reduce power consumption and footprint.
All in all, we are looking forward to 2025. We expect vendors to begin offering QLC-enabled 128TB and 122.88TB NVMe SSDs in the first quarter. We've already heard stories of some of our readers ordering thousands of mass storage drives for delivery in the first quarter.
