WD Ultrastar DC HC690 32TB HDD and 128TB NVMe SSD
Western Digital has announced the WD Ultrastar DC HC690 32TB hard drive and the 128TB enterprise-class NVMe solid-state drive.
The WD Ultrastar DC HC690 is a 32TB solid-state drive. It's also an SMR hard drive, which can be problematic if it's hidden inside a system unit. In data centers, SMR is a well-known technology that can be used to increase drive capacity, especially in archival systems.
WD also demonstrated a 128TB model based on QLC NAND.
WD is showing a QLC SSD performance of 6.53GB/s in sequential writes. Interestingly, it uses an AMD Ryzen 5 series 3600X platform, as display power comes at a premium. This also means it's an earlier PCIe Gen4 controller.
It is important to understand what “AI/ML applications” are. Large AI clusters are using these high-capacity QLC drives to reduce power consumption and footprint.
Overall, we’re looking forward to 2025. We expect vendors to start offering 128TB and 122.88TB NVMe SSDs with QLC support in Q1. We’ve already heard stories of some of our readers ordering thousands of these high-capacity drives with delivery in Q1.
